Cherie (Day) Newland

Cheri Day Newland

Hi Fellow Buccaneers,

Wow, I've been a Newland for so long I don't relate to the name Day at all. Well, I loved my father and grandfather so I do have a fondness for the name. For the particulars, I was born on October 17, lived in Saratoga, attended Moreland grade school, and graduated from Elvira Castrol which was new in 1958, married Joe Newland in 1962, my High School sweetheart. We were married for 50 years. Joe suddenly passed away in 2013 before our 51st anniversary. Miss him daily. We have 1 son, Jon, born in November 1967. No grandchildren but must say young children and small animals would gather around Joe like he was the Pied Piper.

2019 Best of Show for Joe's Corvette.  First and only show for the car, had to do this one for Joe.  Such a wonderful surprise and acknowledgment of Joe's attention to details. Lots of fun and I am so glad I placed the car in the show.

I don't think I ever had a hobby not turn into a business or teaching adventure at some point. Interior Design, Sewing, Dog Training, and Jewelry Design have all been hobbies and businesses at one time. What can I say...? I get bored and move to the next challenge. I love to immerse myself when learning a new skill. It's a 24/7 deal for me. Currently, I'm trying my hand at Photography. Started with Landscape Photography because I seldom get out in nature in the way this type of photography requires. The technology is mind-boggling, the cameras are sophisticated and the software (the darkroom), well, let's face it... it will never be mastered, too many advances, too often but fun and challenging.

Oh my, the careers! Let me forewarn you, I've been called a Renaissance woman. If I had to nail down a niche, it would be communication and relationships, but there are few twists and odd turns in that statement. Right out of High School I went to Beauty College and quickly transitioned from Beautician to licensed Cosmetology Instructor, my first teaching job (loved it!) finished that career as Supervisor and Dean of Instruction for a local Beauty College in San Jose.  All the while, I was going to school at night and took accelerated courses (3 months to complete 1 year) whenever I could in psychology. Added Hypnotherapy to my interest, received a BA in '97, and opened a private practice, continuing on I dropped psychology to attend seminary and received my MS in Religious Science in '82, and in '86 received a D.Min., was ordained, and headed a church in Campbell from '86 to '92.  Occasionally, I fill in as a guest minister for a little church in Gilroy when the need arises.  Eventually,  returning to Psychology, I received my Ph.D. in 2003. My careers were sprinkled with facilitating workshops on Communication Skills, Hypnotherapy, advanced techniques in Transpersonal Psychology, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It's all about building relationships with self and others, creating beneficial and lasting changes as well as assisting my clients to build the reality they wanted to live.  People are fascinating to me.  Each person is so unique, I would mix/match--and-create from a plethora of tools I learned over the years. I say "tools" because I really don't believe anyone needs "intervention" in the customary sense of the word.  Yet, having the tools to manage our states and process what we have labeled a problem is invaluable.  So I developed what I called a Client-Centered, Solution-Oriented approach to change.  I was working "Organically" -- who knew? Some of you may have heard of or experienced a few of the modalities I used, like  (tapping, eye integration movement, cognitive therapy, therapeutic hypnosis, NLP, Gestalt, and more).  You could say my education was spotted and intense, I worked and went to school, but I was young and full of vim-and-vigor, as they say

What I love to do is learn, I'm a consummate learner. I have discovered, for me, learning is a spiritual experience and sharing (teaching), a spiritual expression and that statement brings this "tell-all story" to my current fancy. I have started a website that will offer online experiential courses and tools in Practical Spirituality (TheTAOofNLP.com). It has nothing to do with religion, doctrines, and beliefs. It's an entirely different perspective on what constitutes spirituality. The focus is on a subjective approach to achieving spiritual harmony in living a day to day life.  I'm excited about what there is to discover, learn, explore, and implement as humanistic spirituality is uncovered in the courses offered through this new lens. This idea has been in my hopper for a long time, my ministerial dissertation was titled "Preachers into Teachers: A New Paradigm for the Pulpit. I have my partners to thank for getting me to move forward and create these courses. Both ladies are skilled in their own right yet wanted me to mentor them on the nuances of my approach to working with people and facilitating changes. We found a common ground in this venture.

As for future plans.  My mother celebrated her 99th birthday this year, she is spry, sharp-witted, and a fashion conscience woman.  She has no intention of checking out before her 100th birthday and says she will tell us more after that.  Doctors tell me I will out-live her.  YIKES!!! So, apparently, there is still life to live.  Most recently, I have been invited to consider working closely with an organization teaching professionals their protocol for PSTD.  I haven't heard enough to make a decision and really don't want to put my TAO project on hold. Life is TBC.
