I received a B.S. from Harvey Mudd College in Southern California and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford. I joined IBM at Watson Research Center in New York, and later moved to Almaden Research Center near San Jose. At IBM I helped to develop some of the software that you use every time you use an ATM or a credit card. I also worked on internet standards, which resulted in some travel in Europe and Asia. I was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1997. I retired from IBM in 2008. Since my retirement I've had an adjunct appointment in the Computer Science department at UC Santa Cruz. I also help to organize an annual computer programming competition for college students.

I've been married to my wife Judy for 44 years. We have two grown children and two grandchildren, ages 1 and 4, who live in Reno. We enjoy traveling, reading, and sailing our small boat on Pinecrest Lake.
